What movie would you recommend to someone who is new to Bollywood?

I usually recommend Jab We Me to Bollywood first-timers. It's distinctly Bollywood, but accessible to everyone at the same time. And it's so funny and heartwarming, who wouldn't love it!

What ones do you suggest?

Devdas, the 2002 version, with Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai.
Well, Jab We Met was going to be my suggestion too, LOL. That's the one I'm giving to my stepsister to watch, in fact. I also think Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh, and Pyaar Impossible are all very accessible. If a person likes epics, I think you could give them Jodhaa Akbar.
I always suggest Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham or Monsoon Wedding even,,the latter being in English somewhat..
Sounds like I definitely have to see Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. :-)
It is a beautiful,heart-wrenching funny film about family and the dynamics of it all :)

The classic, still showing in theaters in India since 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge! Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol at their best. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham is also a great one, but see DDLJ first. If you're more into action than romance, Dhoom II (no real need to see Dhoom I first) is a hilarious introduction to Bollywood.
DDLJ - great one! Dhoom 2 is a must see for Hrithik fans.

My first Bollyfilm was Jab We Met...and to this day it has become one of my most treasured items i have in my life...i would therefore recommend this and DDLJ {of course}....and Dostana
Bollywood isn't just one thing, and neither are first-timers a monolithic group. So, there is no one film that I recommend to first-timers. It's important to get to know the person's tastes - and prejudices - and make an individual choice that addresses that person's tastes while stretching their boundaries just enough to chip away at their prejudices. My choices also depend strongly upon whether I'll be watching with the mark or not.

With those caveats in mind, I've had mild success with films as varied as Shree 420, Lagaan, Bunty aur Babli, Sholay, or Jewel Thief. I haven't created any die-hard fans to my knowledge, but I have definitely taken people who were convinced (based upon no hard knowledge at all) that Bollywood was insipid and cheesy, and given them something new that they've actually, to their surprise, enjoyed.
The first film I saw was Aaja Nachle and it totally hooked me - and started me on my quest to watch all of Madhuri Dixit's movies (I've now seen all but 2). So... the people that I've managed to hook as well, I've started them off with Aaja Nachle, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Dil To Pagal Hai. Since I've branched out as well, I now also recommend Jab We Met, Bunty Aur Babli and Bride and Prejudice (for those who aren't too sure about subtitles at first).
Isn't it fun converting people to Bollywood?

I just reviewed Bunty Aur Babli:

Yes - it's completely fun! I've had a blast doing it. :)

Reading your Bunty Aur Babli review is what brought me over to the forum today. It was a great review and reminded why I liked the movie so much. I think I may have to watch it again this next week!
