The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) has announced that its annual awards ceremony will take place in Tampa, Florida next June—the first time the four-day gala will be held in the U.S.
The IIFA awards ceremony, which honors artistic and technical achievement in the Hindi film industry known as Bollywood, takes place in a different city outside of India every year in an effort to promote Hindi cinema around the world. In past years, it has been held in London, Amsterdam, and Johannesburg. The 2013 event was in Macau, China.
Tampa's competition for the 2014 event included Melbourne, Australia, as well as Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
The IIFA awards has an estimated global viewership of more than 800 million and is expected to be an economic boon to the city of Tampa, which has hosted four Super Bowls and the Republican National Convention.
